The
Glendale Ave and Mangum Court Subdivisions
One of the most depressed communities in Durham became
our focus five or six years ago. UDI-CDC decided to
change the environment of an entire community - North
East Central Durham. Activities began with the rehabilitation
of nine houses, in partnership with the City of Durham.
It progressed to the construction of 9 additional
homes that virtually restored an entire block. UDI/CDC
next moved a block further north and completed a housing
project (except two townhouses) that was aborted by
another non-profit. Now eleven families are first
time homeowners.
St.
Joseph’s Center
A
HUD financed elderly center located on Nash and Hope
Streets, serving as an extension of St. Joseph Church.
The facility known as St. Joseph Place has 32 units
and was officially opened in January 2003. It serves
as a retirement home for low-income elderly persons
who are eligible for rental subsidies.
