The
primary focus of UDI-CDC's activities during the first
15 years after formation was the development of the
UDI Industrial Park. This Park began on 26 acres of
land in Durham, about 1 mile from the Research Triangle
Park. When UDI purchased this land, it had no infrastructure
available for development. UDI secured federal grant
funds to extend water and sewer to the site and to
purchase an additional 15 acres of land. Since that
time, UDI Industrial Park has grown to 91 acres and
an asset base value of over $45 million which is considered
the 4th largest among Black businesses in NC.

UDI
has developed this land from ground up, including infrastructure improvements such
as water and sewer line extensions, roadways, curbs and gutters, and landscaping.
It has leveraged a number of federal subsidies form the Economic Development
Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services as well as
substantial private investment in order to provide for the construction of
12 buildings in which approximately 700 people are employed, with a minority
employment rate of 50%. One of these buildings is a small business incubator
that houses 10-14 small light industrial companies.
